Kenowa Courier – 8/6/19

John Wondergem, Director of the Challenger Division of the Grandville Little League, was our speaker today. The Challenger Division provides a baseball option for persons with disabilities and the Kenowa Ambucs has been sponsoring one of the 4 teams. This division has been part of the local Little League for 20 years and currently includes 45 players ages 13-70 playing on Thursdays on 2 ball fields. They employ an “everybody plays” philosophy with coaches pitching and players both batting and fielding. A nightly highlight is the last batter of the game – this player will be hitting a home run and rounding the bases and everybody knows it so it generates excitement, just like a walk-off homer in the major leagues. John’s players have some needs including equipment (anybody have used bats to donate?) and an annual picnic after the last game of the season in mid-June. This is a good example of the Ambucs providing help, and fun, to those with disabilities. Thanks to all of you for making our support possible.

Also today, the club presented a $1,000 check to Andy Tabisz to pay a portion of the cost of a used medical device (Motomed) for Andy’s spouse. No big check (currently AWOL) but the little check should work just fine. Best wishes to the Tabisz’s in getting the most out of the new equipment.

Denim & Diamonds Facets

The committee met on July 31 and reports we currently have 2 platinum, 3 gold and 1 veteran’s sponsorships for this signature event on Friday, October 11 from 6-11p at the Pinnacle Center in Hudsonville. The menu has been selected and you should see an e-vite in your in-box soon. The committee is gathering items for auction and requests club help in bringing in more items and sponsorships. We are hoping to generate a strong turn out and counting on the participation of everyone in both the Kenowa and Walker Chapters. Contact Beth (446-7026 or for more details, to sign up as an event sponsor or to donate auction items.

In addition, we are putting together a short video for that night to highlight what the Ambucs do with funds received. We’d like to make contact with a few folks who have benefitted from Ambuc support – AmTryke recipient, playground builders, therapy or medical equipment recipients, scholarship winners, etc. If you have the name and contact info of such a person who may be open to participating, please send them to Ken Krombeen ( as soon as possible.
