Kenowa Courier – 5/21/19

Emily Mann and a number of her students from the Region 3 Transitions program helped us stuff 450 runner bags today. The students, several of whom are within 2 weeks of graduation from Transitions and moving on to another program for young adults, were helpful, friendly and glad to be part of making the Kenowa Ambuc Memorial Day Race & Parade a success. Our Rebounderz bags now feature info and coupons from Jet’s, Panoupolis, Chow Hound, Hartman Chiropractic, Huntington, Camp Bow Wow, Visser Family YMCA and many more local establishments. Once the work was done, the kids got their “paycheck” – a Sunnybrook lunch of their choice. Thank you to Emily and the Transition students for joining us.

We also received a report from this week’s Ambuc District Board meeting that included the election of Mike from the Grand Rapids club as District Governor and Kelli Williams from our club as District Secretary/Treasurer.

Big Day is Next Week

Memorial Day is NEXT Monday, May 27 and the early forecast is looking favorable — mild and dry. Runner shirts have arrived with the kids’ shirts in colors chosen by each of the various Jenison Public and Jenison Christian schools participating while the adult shirts are in a camo pattern this year. The club member volunteers have generally been divided between the race and parade but we would love to hear from other members who might donate some time that morning. Of particular need are folks to walk/drive in the parade for the Kenowa Ambucs passing out candy, etc. Please contact Kelli at kwilliams@financeofamerica.com to join your fellow Ambucs in making this event a success and, thank you, to those who have already helped or jumping in next Monday.

Let’s Swing

The annual Kenowa Ambucs Adaptive Golf Clinic will be Tuesday, June 11 from 10a to 1p at the Pines Golf Course on Byron Center Avenue. Our golfing guests will practice on the range and green and then play a couple of holes prior to a free pizza lunch. Members are needed to host the event, assist our golfers and eat some pizza. This is a big event for these folks so please put this on your calendar and turn out for a good time with good people.

Fun Fact: According to townandcountrymag.com, Memorial Day, originally called “Decoration Day”, was established by Union General John A. Logan and celebrated on May 30. In 1971, by federal action, the holiday moved to the final Monday in May.

Quote of the Day: “The 30th of May, 1868 is designated for the purpose of strewing with flowers,

or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion, and whose bodies now lie in almost every city, village and hamlet churchyard in the land.” – Gen. John A. Logan
