Kenowa Courier – 3/5/19

By my calculations, we are well into week 4 since Groundhog Day so I’m only going to be patient for spring for another 10 days.  Today was another winter blast (“March comes in like a lion . . . “) and our group size reflected the weather. With no speaker scheduled, we focused on club business such as the preparations for the Memorial Day event and a couple of items from the most recent board meeting.  Here are some highlights:

  • The Ambucs Midstates Regional Conference is April 5-6 in Frankenmuth.  The club will pay the registration and hotel cost for up to 2 club members so, if you wish to attend, please notify President Hodge.  Your early registration deadline is March 20.
  • The “mobi-mat” sponsored by the club to get folks with mobility needs over the beach to the lake at Georgetown’s 8th Street Park has arrived.
  • No “build” date yet set for the accessible playground at Hughes Park in Hudsonville sponsored in part by our club.  We will pass that date along when it is received.
  • Big Hatters without their hats were fined.
  • Also from the February Board meeting, the club has agreed to support a Grandville Little League “Challenger” division team for 2019 @ $550.  We are looking into hosting an end of year picnic for the challenger teams.

Non-club business conversation topics today included the Cottonwood Avenue construction in Georgetown, pillars in parking ramps, designing modern libraries, the bad mix that is steep hills and slippery roads and Jethro 94.9 – Classic Country with a Twist.

Let’s all make an effort to attend the next club meeting on March 19.  See you at Sunnybrook.

Memorial Day Race/Parade Prep

Race planning is underway.  The website is being updated, potential charity partners are being contacted and there are a couple new features being implemented — race route maps for posting on the day of the event to answer the most asked question of participants and a “first come, first lined up” policy for parade entries to incent them not to wait until the last minute to register.  At our March 19 chapter meeting, we will work more on this as a group. Please try to attend that day, as there is a place for all members to plug in and be part of this very important event, even for those with limited time.

Chapter Miscellaneous

Big Hat Days:  The first club meeting of September, December, March and June are Big Hat Days (BHD).  Big Hatters, please wear your Stetsons to the club meeting on those dates. Next BHD is June 4.

Fun Fact (March Edition):  According to doctors at the Cleveland Clinic (as reported by Readers Digest), the number of vasectomies surges by 50% during the first week of March Madness.  They speculate that if patients are going to spend a whole day doing nothing to recuperate, they want to do it on a day they’d like to be sitting in front of the television.
