Kenowa Courier – 2/19/19

Today’s Meeting:

The calm weather today was welcome.  We had a nice turnout including one guest who joined us – Kate, a CMU graduate student interning with Katelyn at Kentwood.  Also with us was Janet Korn, Senior VP at Experience Grand Rapids who is responsible for the marketing team inspiring people to visit Kent County.  Janet shared some 2016 Kent County visitor stats with us: 18.3 million visitors spent $1.3 billion supporting 30,000 County jobs in the hospitality industry.  There are 450 conventions per year and 10% of our visitors come from Chicago, up significantly following an Experience GR targeted marketing effort there. Her group uses 6 “brand pillars” for our area including art and culture, food/ dining, music, craft beer/beverages, family travel and outdoor recreation.  They have also developed 3 tourism trails – a food trail, a music trail and an ale trail. Everything you could possibly want to know about visiting West Michigan is available at where they have more than 5000 users daily. They want Kent County residents to know all about what our region has to offer as we are the best ambassadors to our extended families, out of town friends and national organizations that may want to visit or stage an event in Grand Rapids.

Memorial Day Race/Parade Prep

Race planning is underway.  The website is being updated, potential charity partners are being contacted and there are a couple new features being implemented — race route maps for posting on the day of the event to answer the most asked question of participants and a “first come, first lined up” policy for parade entries to incent them not to wait until the last minute to register.  At our March 19 chapter meeting, we will work more on this as a group. Please try to attend that day as there is a place for all members to plug in and be part of this very important event, even for those with limited time.
