Today’s Meeting:

A partisan crowd (very Pro-Ambucs) turned out on Election day at Sunnybrook where our speakers were Sandy LeBlanc and Heather Schaedig of the Grandville-Jenison Chamber of Commerce.  After some confusion and debate about the lunch menu (this group takes its lunch very seriously), Sandy and Heather filled us in on current and future activity at the Chamber including some new twists.  These include a “Service Day” next spring to which the Kenowa Ambucs would be invited to participate, a new “Young Professionals” group and several other new small groups.  They are currently implementing a quarterly “Coffee with Students” hour to promote business person sharing and interaction with students and answering questions from these future members of the business community and work force.  Many annual events remain including the Chamber annual meeting in January, Community Awards Reception in April, golf outing in June and several “Just 4 Fun” outings.  Congratulations, also, to Heather on celebrating her 10th anniversary as a Chamber staff member.

Wow!  THANK YOU, Sheldon & Pat Cole

Pat Cole, wife of our long time member Sheldon who we lost this year, and her son stopped into the October 23 Kenowa Ambuc board meeting to make a $5,000 donation to our club to be applied to AmTrykes and scholarships.  Many thanks were expressed and we expect to recognize Sheldon & Pat as sponsors of the 2019 Denim & Diamonds event.

October Chapter Board Meeting News

In addition to the Cole donation, at the October Board meeting we reviewed Chapter finances including very strong check book and CD balances (copy of the report can be requested from Treasurer Ron VanSurksum) and discussed trying to be more intentional, rather than reactive, with our Chapter giving.  One suggestion was to ask for referrals from non-profits that we have previously contributed to, such as those that provide scholarships for various therapies consistent with our mission, so that we can help fulfill, directly, the needs of applicants that those groups may not otherwise be able to help due to budget restraints.  A related suggestion resulted in a consensus of the group to try to give an AmTrykes or scholarship away on a quarterly basis at a regular club meeting with three board members tasked, on a rotating basis, with presenting an opportunity each quarter.  The first quarterly give away, informally dubbed “Mission in Motion”, will be in March.

Fun Fact:   Benjamin Franklin proposed daylight savings time in the 1780’s and it was adopted in the U.S. during World War I.  According to mentalfloss.com, the federal law extending daylight savings time into November from the last Sunday in October went into effect in 2007 after lobbying by the candy industry which was interested in providing an extra hour of daylight on Halloween.
