Today’s Meeting:

The Kenowa Ambucs met at a very sunny Sunnybrook Country Club today and our Kenowa club business was the priority as we move out of summer and into fall.  Some of the topics covered were . . .

  • the reintroduction of some meeting day fun via the Sergeants such as a quarter pot, the 50/50 drawing, birthday recognitions and some potential new twists.
  • the effort to set up regular after-hour club events will be continued. This is thought to be a way to use more casual settings to spark club networking, to give a participation avenue for those who have difficulty making noon meetings and an opportunity to invite new/interested folks to get to know us in a more informal way.  The next after-hour event will be at the Win Tavern 33 in Jenison on Friday, September 14 from 4:30 to 6:00 p.m.  Future such events, for the time being, will also be held on the 2nd Friday of the month but the locations will vary.
  • the delivery of 2 new AmTrykes to the club. We will ask Curt Stuck to let us know if help is needed for assembly.
  • the club’s membership in the Grandville-Jenison Chamber of Commerce which means Kenowa members are invited to participate in Chamber events this month including a networking event on September 12, a “Business Blind Date” on September 19 and a “State of the Community” breakfast on September 21. Contact the Chamber for more specifics on these, and other, events.

Harbor House, Not Sunnybrook on September 18

Please plan on our next meeting at noon on Tuesday, September 18 being held at Harbor House Ministries, the assisted living facility for adults with disabilities on 44th Street just west of 8th Avenue in Georgetown Township.  We expect a good program there and hope everyone will come out to participate in a nice field trip to a venue we have supported over the years.

Marty is the Man

We’ve always known it but now it is official.  Congratulations to long time Kenowa Ambuc Marty Rogalski who has been recognized by Legal Aid of West Michigan with the 2018 Michael Barnes Award for his many years of legal service to the community.  Marty will be honored on Thursday, October 25 from 5:30 to 7:30p at the City Flats ballroom, 77 Monroe Center.  Sounds like we are welcome to attend the ceremony honoring Marty, perhaps with a small donation to Legal Aid.  If I can get a copy of any press release, I will share it with the group.

Fun Fact (Back to School Edition):   According to surfnetkids.com, the oldest public school in the U.S. was Boston’s Latin School founded in 1635 and 5 of the 56 signers of the Declaration of Independence graduated from that school – Benjamin Franklin, John Hancock, Robert Treat Paine, Samuel Adams and William Hopper.  Only the wealthy in America could afford an elementary school education until reform led by Horace Mann and Henry Barnard in the 1840’s created the first tax-funded schools.

Quote of the Day:   “Education, then, beyond all other devices of human origin, is the great equalizer of the conditions of men, the balance-wheel of the social machinery.”   —   Horace Mann
