Kenowa Courier – 3/20/18

Today’s Meeting:

Our speaker today was Emily Mann of the Region III Transition Program at Grandville Public Schools along with three of her students: Oscar, Amanda and Kelsey.  The Transition Program helps people with disabilities ages 19 to 21 from the Grandville, Wyoming, Godfrey-Lee, Godwin and Byron Center school districts make the critical transition from student to adulthood using four “domains”: work skill development, living skill development, community participation/awareness and personal accountability.

Emily introduced us generally to the program and then the students chimed in with their well-prepared statements about volunteer opportunities they enjoy (Ronald McDonald House baking, Gilda’s Club gardening, Residence Inn vacuuming and more), class activities (working out at GVSU, shopping) and personal aspirations (working at a bakery, landscaping, lemonade stand). Through the Transitions program students advance their ability to interact in public, be prompt, handle money, cook, complete tasks, stay safe, adapt to new environments, maintain hygiene, read, manage time, use public transit, communicate and be good citizens — all of which better equips them to be adults in a work environment and/or the larger community. Thanks to Emily and her impressive students for sharing their stories with our group.

Our Condolences to Scott Pastoor

Scott’s dad, Richard Pastoor, passed away on Sunday. Visitation is scheduled for Wednesday, March 21 from 2-4p and 6-8p at Matthysse-Kuiper Funeral Home in Grandville with the funeral on Thursday at 11:00a at 8th Reformed Church in Wyoming.

April 17 Meeting Is A Field Trip

The regular club meeting on Tuesday, April 17 will be a field trip to David’s House, 2390 Banner Drive in Wyoming. (Take Belfield west off Clyde Park Avenue between 28th and Burton and turn left on Banner Drive).   Do not go to Sunnybrook for the meeting that day.

Memorial Day Race & Parade

A large snag was hit with a county road commission denial of the permit to close down Baldwin Street for this year’s Ambuc Memorial Day race and parade. Construction at the Baldwin/Cottonwood intersection makes Baldwin a designated detour route and this is the reason for the denial. Our able Georgetown duo of Dan & Rod has consulted with the Road Commission on a possible work-around that would still allow us the use of the current route if we can re-sign the detour that morning. That comes with a cost but would preserve the event. More info will be provided as this develops but please continue to save the morning of Monday, May 28 for the race/parade. Runner bag stuffing is planned for our regular meeting on May 15 – if you or your business has items to contribute, they need to be ready to go by that date and please notify Dave Hodge or Kelli Williams.
