Kenowa Courier – 3/6/18

The Official Newsletter of the Kenowa Chapter of AMBUCS – Chartered May 28, 1957. President: Kelli Williams – Vice-President: David Hodge – Treasurer: Doug Levering Secretary: Andrea Spagnoulo – Sergeants: Rod Weersing and Nick Bakker

Today’s Meeting:

Our meeting today was held at the Pine Grove Learning Center (PGLC) in Wyoming. Built in 2009, this KISD school serves approximately 120 students ages 5-26 with cognitive impairments, multiple physical impairments and/or autism, most coming from the southwest side of Grand Rapids. PGLC is the twin to the Lincoln School on the northeast side. PGLC had a recent addition expanding its capacity. In addition to classrooms, the school includes a gym, pool, cafeteria/multi-purpose room, PT/OT space, sensory room, sensory garden and two accessible playgrounds. Four nurses are on site to meet student daily medical needs.

Over the past several years the Kenowa Ambucs have donated approximately a dozen AmTrykes for PGLC student use and they were very apparent today with a steady stream of “AmTryking” students whizzing around the halls after their lunch hour. Clearly they are a popular and appreciated much enhancement and we added 1 more today by giving a new AmTryke to Troyanna. Paul, our PT contact at the school will be retiring at the end of the school year but new contacts have been made to keep this relationship going. Thanks are due, again, to Curt Stuck for all his work in getting AmTrykes in the hands of these students.

Next Club Field Trip – April 17

The regular club meeting on Tuesday, April 17 will be a field trip to David’s House, 2390 Banner Drive in Wyoming. (Take Belfield west off Clyde Park Avenue between 28th and Burton and turn left on Banner Drive).   Do not go to Sunnybrook for the meeting that day.

Denim & Diamonds Recap

160+ Ambucs and guests attended this 5th annual fundraiser on Friday, February 23 at the Pinnacle Center in Hudsonville. Beth and her committee put on a fun and successful event with a preliminary estimate of $14,000 in net proceeds to be split by the Kenowa and Walker clubs. The new venue got very positive reviews as did the collaboration with Walker and both are very likely to continue. There has been some discussion of moving the event to the fall and, if so, the next event would likely be in fall of 2019.   Special thanks to member Ron VanSurksum of Advanced Asset Management for his company’s title sponsorship and to Beth VanWieren and the committee for leadership on this event.

Board Highlights

The Chapter Board met on February 27. Dave Hodge is working with Katelyn Bush regarding a possible minor chapter sponsorship of the Kentwood Adaptive Riding Club she spoke about at our February 20 club meeting. Also, Spring Roundup is coming and we are hopeful of adding 2-4 potential new members. The Memorial Day Race Committee will assume operational control of the parade for 2018 as Mavis is unavailable except for consulting with the committee. The Race web link went active on February 27 and includes a coupon code for a $5 discount for the first 30 days to encourage pre-registrations. Lastly, Marty Rogalski presented draft amendments to the (very old) Chapter By-Laws and took comments in order to bring a subsequent draft back to a future board meeting for further review.
