Today’s Meeting:

President Kelli told us about a couple of new twists for the Kenowa Ambucs today. The first was obvious to all those attending — our tables are pushed much closer together to facilitate better conversation and interaction among our members. The previous format had the effect of somewhat limiting conversation to those immediately to your right and left unless you wanted to shout across the gap to those across the room from you. The new format brings everyone closer around the tables.   Another change will be a practice of introducing ourselves individually to our speakers and guests. Our group is small enough to do this quickly and it is hoped this will convey a nice welcome to non-members and facilitate our club’s future growth.

Our speaker today was Marcelle Jones of ”Access Always in All Ways” which is a social services consulting business dedicated to restoring dignity, improving quality of life and advocating for those with disabilities. Marcelle has had a 15 year career in higher education and is certified in Mental Health First Aid and as an ADA Coordinator and is experienced in accessibility design, Title IX, universal design for learning and best practices for offices. She assists parents, students, colleges, high schools, community agencies, non-profits and corporations advocating for individuals with disabilities and working with/coaching them 1-on-1. Examples include coaching an adult with Asberger’s on interview and workplace skills and advocating for a person with a service dog to be able to have the dog attend to her in a hospital lab environment. Marcelle told us the former “medical model” of the disabled as individuals in need to be fixed which has been reframed to a “social” model where the environment is changed to be neutral and remove barriers to the disabled.

After completion of her presentation, Marcelle handed in her application to join the Kenowa Ambucs as our newest member. Please welcome her to our chapter when you see her.

50/50 Winner:   No drawing today.

Kenowa Ambuc Board Business

The Chapter’s Board met on August 22nd. To keep everyone up to date, Kelli provided copies of the Board meeting agenda and draft minutes as well as a copy of the newly-approved Chapter budget at today’s lunch meeting. Some highlights include: Finance – we have $17,000 currently in our checking account and a like number in a CD, we are looking for additional local projects. Medical Equipment – we are exploring ceasing loaning out equipment as ours is getting very outdated and not getting the job done, there are space and maintenance limitations and there are other local options. AmTrykes – we are hopeful of including more members in AmTryke deliveries in the future. Information – members are encouraged to take photos at Chapter events and socials for posting on social media in an effort to promote membership. Fundraisers – We are exploring working with the Walker chapter on their nut sale and restaurant calendar fundraisers. Ray Lighthart will attend our September 19 meeting to discuss. District – A Q2 meeting is expected.
