Today’s Meeting:

It was a smaller summertime crowd today but those who attended were privileged to share in the long-awaited presentation to Cherrie Johns of her Big Hat for bringing in 3 new members in a 12 month period. Congratulations to Cherrie.   Our speaker was our Vice-President David Hodge in his role as President of the Grandville-Walker Community Foundation. The Foundation, with a mission to utilize “resources to continually strengthen our community” had roots in our own Ambuc club and grew from an exploratory committee formed in 2015, launched on June 30, 2016 and just recently received its official 501c(3) status. They have identified the key stakeholder groups – public, donors, non-profits and volunteers – and, in the next 12 months, they will work through three key committees to kick off a “Two Communities, Two Million Dollars” capital campaign. We can expect to see the implementation of a gradual public relations and marketing campaign to build name recognition and educate about the Foundation’s current areas of interest which are Arts, Recreation & Culture, Seniors, Students and [your idea here]. To support the effort, you can like the Foundation at www.facebook.com/grandvillewalkerfoundation, consider a future contribution or volunteer to join the Capital Campaign Cabinet. Dave is your guy for more information.

50/50 Winner:   No drawing today.

Media Mogul and Hipster DJ Master Louie P

We also learned more today about Scott Pastoor’s hobby/side job as majority owner/operator of WYGR Radio found on your FM dial at 94.9 and on the AM at 1530. The hip hop/polka pop format is not one you see every day but Scott and his crew make it work and have a lot of fun doing it for their loyal listeners in Grand Rapids and the closest suburban cities. The station is a small 250-watter taking advantage of FCC incentives and is one of only 3 local radio stations not owned by a media conglomerate. I’m planning to call in with a request for my favorite polka band, “Gus Polinski and the Kenosha Kickers”. [Trivia – What movie featured that band? Answer below.]

Band on the Beach is Friday

Reminder that Brad Cook is hosting a beach party at his home (5728 18th Street in Hudsonville) on Friday, August 18. Bring your own chair and beverage and party to a classic rock band on the shores of Lake Cook.  The Friday night forecast looks primed for fun.

Chapter Miscellaneous

[Trivia Answer: Home Alone. John Candy played Gus Polinski.]

Fun Fact:  According to factretriever.com, in the summer heat, the iron in France’s Eiffel Tower expands, making the tower grow more than 6 inches.
