Kenowa Courier – 5/2/17

The Official Newsletter of the Kenowa Chapter of AMBUCS – Chartered May 28, 1957. President: Dawn Martinson – Vice-President: Kelli Williams – Treasurer: Doug Levering Secretary: Andrea Spagnoulo – Sergeants: Rod Weersing and Nick Bakker

Today’s Meeting:

We gathered today in the Rush Creek Room at Sunnybrook and it was so nice, we are looking at whether we might make it our regular meeting space. Our speaker was Rick Chapla, Vice-President of Strategic Initiatives at the Right Place, Inc. (RPI). RPI is a 32 year old, non-profit, non-governmental economic development agency serving West Michigan with services to support the expansion, retention and attraction of high-paying jobs to grow our region’s interconnected economy. RPI is 84% supported by the volunteer investments of the private sector and has a 43 member board representing most of our area’s major employers. Global trade and commerce today is fast-paced and competitive and it recognizes no geo-political boundaries so RPI is there to see that West Michigan attracts and retains manufacturing investment and talent. Rick says the companies they work with recognize West Michigan is “different” in that it has a strong culture of business, entrepreneurship and collaboration. We are an attractive area with all the amenities to attract business investment and our future as a region is bright.

50/50 Winner:   No drawing today.

IMPORTANT:  Meeting Dates & Location Switches in May

The month of May is throwing us a curve ball and you will want to pay attention so you don’t swing and miss and show up at the wrong place at the wrong time.  First, we are moving the normal 2nd Tuesday Memorial Day Race/Parade committee meeting and expanding the invitation to all our chapter members because we are using this opportunity to take a field trip to see our friend, Sheldon Cole, and honor him with a proclamation.  This is a very big deal for Sheldon as he lists his 26-year membership in the Ambucs as a highlight of his life and; due to the progression of his affliction, he is rapidly diminishing in capability to enjoy this honor (insert your prayer thought here).  All who can are encouraged to join us NEXT TUESDAY, May 9 at Clark Home, 1551 Franklin SE for a sandwich lunch with Sheldon.  I believe an RSVP email will be going out on this.

Next, the regular chapter lunch meeting that would have fallen on the 3rd Tuesday, May 16, will now be held on the 4th Tuesday, May 23rd, switching places with the monthly Board meeting normally held on the 4th Tuesday.

Lastly, the BOARD meeting that was originally scheduled for May 23 will be held on May 16.  Below is the complete May schedule.  In June we will return to the normal schedule.

May 9 – Race Committee (all Chapter members encouraged to attend) at Clark Home

May 16 – Regular lunch meeting canceled.  Monthly Board meeting at noon at Grandville City Hall.

May 23 – Rescheduled regular Chapter lunch meeting @ Sunnybrook in the Rush Creek Room (plan on stuffing race bags after lunch).

May 29 – Memorial Day Race & Parade at Georgetown Township.  All hands are needed.

Memorial Day Race & Parade – May 29

Kelli reports we have had a very good response from our new race partner, Jenison Public Schools, as they have signed up 176 runners.  No number yet from Jenison Christian Schools but they always have a strong turnout.  Non-aligned race signups are also ahead of pace.  The “new” race route ending on the Baldwin Street parade route will be continued.

We will need all the Chapter volunteers we can get for both the race and the parade so please save a few hours on Memorial Day morning and be ready to pitch in and even bring your family and friends to help out.  The committee will provide final details as we stuff race bags during our regular meeting on May 23.
