Kenowa Courier – 2/21/17

The Official Newsletter of the Kenowa Chapter of AMBUCS – Chartered May 28, 1957. President: Dawn Martinson – Vice-President: Kelli Williams – Treasurer: Doug Levering Secretary: Andrea Spagnoulo – Sergeants: Rod Weersing and Nick Bakker

Today’s Meeting:

For those who missed it, apologies for there being no February 7 edition of the Courier.  Illness struck that morning and I was absent from the meeting.  At today’s meeting, we met Katerina (Kaddi) Schuster who is a German exchange student living with Dawn Martinson’s family this school year while attending East Kentwood High School.  Kaddi received a competitive grant for this 10 month experience which is quite the accomplishment as only 3% of applicants are accepted (vs. a 4% acceptance rate at Harvard, for example).  The program is a joint venture of the United States and Germany known as CBYX which has been in operation since 1983.  Kaddi had an interest in coming to the States dating back to seeing movies about American high school and did the research necessary to make her application to CBYX.  She also has an interest in government and politics so she has had an eye-opening year in the States on that front.  Kaddi has great English language skills that go back to a German elementary school requirement.  At Kentwood, her favorite classes have been theater arts and teen leadership.

After lunch, we finished our meeting with some “goody bag” stuffing.  Thanks to all who were present and helped out.

Who Are You Wearing?

Not sure if we’ll see any of the Hollywood red carpet fashionistas for pre-event interviews but the big Oscar’s Night Party fundraiser is this Saturday, February 25 at Sunnybrook Country Club.  Cocktails start at 5:30 followed by a roving dinner from multiple food stations at 7:30.  There will be live and silent auctions, a champagne toast and DJ.  Dress is formal/glam/suits with tux optional.  $18 of $55 individual ticket cost is tax deductible and proceeds will be split by the Kenowa Ambucs, Comprehensive Therapy Center and Lake Michigan Academy.  Currently we are expecting 150 to attend.

Free Leadership Training – Apply Within

Looking to grow and to make your mark while serving a noble mission?  We will need to elect our Chapter officers for next year in the next month or so.  In particular, we need a Vice-President and a Secretary.   Please contact President Dawn Martinson or Vice-President Kelli Williams if you are ready to step up and join the long line of able leaders of this club.  Newly elected officers will be invited to the annual Spring Regional Meeting in Kalamazoo on April 21 & 22 where you will learn all you need to know to serve in these capacities.
