Today’s Meeting:

A smallish late summer crowd attended today’s Kenowa Ambucs lunch meeting.  Michelle Polanic was a guest.  She is entering the 2nd of a 2 year graduate program in Occupational Therapy at GVSU and she thanked the club for the scholarship we awarded her.  She is a lifetime resident of Jenison, has had a clinical experience at UM Children’s Hospital and aspires to work for Mary Free Bed.

Our speakers were Aubrey Pettinga and Paige Wigger.  These enterprising 3rd graders-to-be at Hudsonville Christian School conceived this summer a lemonade & cookie stand effort to raise funds to pay for a handicapped-accessible swing at their school.  They had noticed such a swing in another park and thought of their classmate, Noah, who has spina bifida.  Each also has a brother with a disability.  Their goal was the swing cost of $500 and that is the amount of the check member Curt Stuck wrote them on behalf of our club at their lemonade stand after being made aware of the event through Mavis and consulting with the Board.  The stand plus a can drive netted them $2,500 (I think, there was a little trouble with the zeros in their well-prepared speech) so they are purchasing 2 swings and putting some toward a similar future purchase.  The swings should be installed on the school playground by the start of the school year.  Aubrey and Paige seem like great kids and their moms, who were also present, support and encourage them but make them do the work.  Nice story.
