Today’s Meeting:

With our speaker today being Jessica VanGinhoven, Communication Specialist with Ottawa County Parks & Recreation, talking about a new dog park, it seems appropriate to let this newsletter go entirely to the dogs.  It’s a ruff job, but somebody has to do it and, hopefully, it won’t land your bulletin editor in the dog house.

Ambuc Top Dog Mavis Byers opened the meeting and we had (K)9 Kenowa Ambucs under the Sunnybrook woof + 3 folks who will be joining our club.  These are Nick Bakker of Waddell & Reed who has attended the past few meetings, Terri Prince of United Bank and Bridget Curry of Wes Michigan Community Bank who is transferring in from the Walker Ambucs.  Welcome to each of you and thanks for joining us.

First, we pawed over a couple items of club business:  The Oscar’s Night final numbers aren’t yet in as our treasurer works (doggedly) on finishing up other people’s taxes but we will hound him soon for a final accounting and the projections are looking very good.  Also, Curt is just scratching the surface on the next Junior Golf Outing – look for a final date soon.

We then muzzled ourselves so that Jessica could unleash her talk. She gave us the scoop on the dog park at Grand Ravines Park in Georgetown Township.  It is 21 acres in size and allows off-leash dog activity for dogs of all sizes.  A modern restroom will be constructed this summer and the park’s parking lot will be paved.  The dog park is part of the larger park that features walking trails, a scenic overlook and a structure that can be rented for graduation parties and other events.  There is even a pair of nesting eagles there.  Some funding for the dog park has come via the Hudsonville-Jenison Community Foundation and the Chow Hound store is also running a campaign to match customer donations.  It sounds like this park is the cat’s meow (oops, theme for a different newsletter – clearly barking up the wrong tree).

Mavis then rang the bell ending the meeting and answering the question:  Who let the dogs out?  Mavis did.

50/50 Winner:   Beth Van Wieren

Every Dog Has Its (Memorial) Day

They’ll be running like greyhounds as they pound down the street in the Georgetown/Kenowa Ambucs Memorial Day 5K road race on Monday, May 30 with each runner hoping to be the pick of the litter and retrieve a medal.  The race is a dog-eat-dog competition but it is followed by a much more leisurely parade where spectators will grab a seat, perhaps near a hydrant, and enjoy more parade entries than a dog has fleas (28 entries already).   We will be signing up club member volunteers next month.  Be ready to fetch yourself and some family/friends to this fun event.

Don’t Make Us Beg

We need next year’s Alpha Dog.  VP Dawn Martinson moves up to the President’s slot for the 2016-17 year starting on June 1st but we are in need of a Vice-President who will move up and bring all us wags to heel in 2017.  You don’t have to be an old dog; those with new tricks are welcome.  So, paws and think about it, and then contact Dawn at drmartinson@sbcglobal.net.

They may not have been “Best in Show” but, hopefully, you haven’t found these puns too arf-full.  When a punster gets the bone in their teeth, they can be real bulldogs.  (Sorry.  Stopping now.  I’ll be here all week.  Remember to tip your waiter.)
