Kenowa Courier – 4/5/16

The Official Newsletter of the Kenowa Chapter of AMBUCS – Chartered May 28, 1957. President: Mavis Byers – Vice-President: Dawn Martinson – Treasurer: Doug Levering Secretary: Andrea Spagnoulo – Sergeants: Rod Weersing and David Hodge

Today’s Meeting:

It is pretty quiet in West Michigan this week with many gone on spring break trips but we still had 11 Kenowa Ambucs in attendance today.  Also with us for the 2nd time was Nick Bakker of the Waddell & Reed financial planning firm and V.P. Dawn Martinson’s husband whose job at X-Rite has been eliminated after 30 years (if you have a lead on any jobs – I think he was in manufacturing – let Dawn know).

Our speakers were Sue Hartman, Membership Development Specialist with the Grandville-Jenison Chamber of Commerce and Theresa Meandering, Grandville DDA Downtown Event Coordinator.  Sue told us the Chamber is working on their annual golf outing (Monday, June 13 at Sunnybrook); the Beer, Bands & BBQ event in Grandville on July 2; their Fall Expo of Chamber members and choosing recipients for annual awards and local scholarships.  Theresa, who is beginning her 3rd year as Event Coordinator, ran us through Grandville’s upcoming schedule of downtown events that includes an Art & Chocolate Walk on April 22, the Hoppin’ Wild Relay on May 13, the Summer Kickoff Celebration on June 10, the Vintage & Blueberry Festival in August and the annual Fall Fest.  She says successful downtown events are the result of the support and cooperation of business sponsors, the community and City departments.  Events are financially supported by the business sponsors and the Grandville DDA with a budget of approximately $30,000.  Theresa welcomed anyone interested in getting involved in the events or sponsorship to call her at Grandville City Hall (531-3030).

50/50 Winner:   Dennis Engels

Giving Back on Memorial Day

The Kenowa Ambucs’ longest-running annual fundraiser event is the Memorial Day 5K road race and parade set for Monday, May 30 in Georgetown Township.  We have a new charity partner this year, the Jenison Education Foundation, and also a new and exciting 5K race course.

All members are asked to help out your club by volunteering a couple hours that morning.  In addition to raising funds for our mission, this is a fun and social time with your fellow Ambucs, your willing family members and the community.  You’ll be gratified by giving of your time and effort while having fun interacting in the community and you’ll still have plenty of time to enjoy the holiday.

We Need Your Leadership

VP Dawn Martinson will be moving up to the President’s slot for the 2016-17 year starting on June 1st but we are in need of volunteers to serve as Vice-President and Treasurer.  Many of us have served one or more stints as a club officer so we would love to have folks who haven’t yet served step forward and offer their skills in one of these roles.  The work is not hard but it is very valuable to the club and, often, a valuable experience to the individual as well.  Please don’t wait to be asked, step up and volunteer now by contacting Dawn at
