Kenowa Courier – 1/19/16

The Official Newsletter of the Kenowa Chapter of AMBUCS – Chartered May 28, 1957. President: Mavis Byers – Vice-President: Dawn Martinson – Treasurer: Doug Levering Secretary: Andrea Spagnoulo – Sergeants: Rod Weersing and David Hodge

Today’s Meeting:

I was held up in a meeting this week and so missed Tuesday’s Ambuc luncheon.  Fortunately, Kelli Williams grabbed some notes so we could produce a (slightly delayed) newsletter.  It was a small crowd but those present heard from Jen Postema from the Jenison Public Education Foundation (JPEF).  JPEF’s mission is to enrich the education of Jenison students by providing funding and resources for enhanced programs and innovative learning.  Teachers and students submit grant proposals and projects that are “out of the box” and enhance the learning process are selected for funding each May.  Examples include classroom care kits, 3d printer, STEM Club for girls and a botany project with indoor winter growing. JPEF has made 183 grants totaling over $200,000 since program inception in 1995 with each grant typically in the $1,000-$2,000 range.  In 2015, over $17,000 in grants were awarded.  JPEF has an endowment but also fundraises each year in an attempt to cover grant costs.  Those fundraisers have included auctions, brew and pizza night, chocolate festival and, next week, the acapella singing group “Vocalocity” will be performing.  Also, teachers help the program by making donations via voluntary payroll deductions.  You can learn more at either or their Facebook page.

50/50 Winner:   None.  Scott Pastoor can try to extend his win streak at the next meeting.

Racing to Memorial Day 2016

The Ambucs Memorial Day Race Committee meets on the 2nd Tuesday at noon and is off to a great start for this year’s event, a major fundraiser for the Kenowa Ambucs.  Rod Weersing is working with the Township on a new and exciting course, sponsorship renewals are being requested this month, Andrea Spagnuolo is well ahead of schedule on the operations side and the committee is looking into pricing for better t-shirts and the possibility of arm warmers.  Please let a Race Committee member know if you would like to become more involved.

And Isn’t Fun the Best Thing To Have?

The Chapter’s Fun Committee is looking at options for our club’s next social event.  Ideas proposed include a visit to Osgood’s Brewing, a Grand Rapids Drive game or a St. Patrick’s Day get-together.  Stay tuned for more information or chime in with your preference or idea.

Chapter Miscellaneous

2016 Oscars Event:  Additional sponsors at all levels and donations are being sought for this annual fundraiser in conjunction with the Grandville Rotary and Special Olympics on March 5.  Juliet Dragos of TV-13 will emcee the event that will include improv comedy, silent auction, dinner and wine/beer.  A “Save-the-date” has now gone out.  Contact Beth VanWieren to help, for more information or to commit to putting together a basket for the auction.

Do You Have a Speaker Idea?  Do you know a potential lunch speaker or have an idea for a topic that might be of interest to our club members?  If so, please share that idea or contact information with Vice-President Dawn Martinson.
