Kenowa Courier – 11/03/15

The Official Newsletter of the Kenowa Chapter of AMBUCS – Chartered May 28, 1957. President: Mavis Byers – Vice-President: Dawn Martinson – Treasurer: Doug Levering Secretary: Andrea Spagnoulo – Sergeants: Rod Weersing and David Hodge

Today’s Meeting:

We had a great crowd of almost 30 today at Sunnybrook as the Kenowa Ambucs honored our Memorial Day sponsors and gave away an AmTryke to almost-three-year-old Corbin Leach.  While Corbin explored the Sunnybrook hallways on his new ride, David Hodge explained a bit about the Ambucs to our guests and sponsors including AmTrykes, therapy scholarships, the golf outing, our recent gift to the Kent Special Riding Club and our fundraising events.

Sponsors present to receive photo plaques of appreciation included Wells Fargo, Embroidery House, Hascall Steel, Chemical Bank, Gimbal Capital Management, Hartman Family Chiropractic, Finance America, Grand River Bank and Advanced Asset Management.  Thanks also to those members who brought guests to this Branding Time meeting to introduce them to our Chapter.  Past District Governor Fern Barnett was one of those guests and will be signing up as a new Kenowa Ambucs member.

A correction from a previous Courier: Member Kristine Schwab spoke on recreational therapy but the newsletter referred to her by her maiden name. Sorry, Kristine.

50/25/25 Winners:          No 50/50 today.

“Strike” That Lunch Meeting From Your Calendar

In place of the regular club lunch on Tuesday, November 17, the Fun Committee is organizing an evening bowling social event on that date.  Do not go to Sunnybrook for lunch but please do join the group for some informal fellowship and recreation.    Watch your e-mail for the details.

Branding Time Contest

October and November are the months of the National Ambucs membership drive called Branding Time.  Members will get 10 points for a new member signup, 4 points for bringing in a bona fide guest (1 time only) and 2 points for your own attendance at our October and November club meetings.  At the end of the month, the member with the highest point total will receive $100, 2nd place gets $75 and 3rd gets $50.  Please think about inviting a friend or colleague to check out the Kenowa Ambucs and help us extend our reach and mission.

Tickets Please

Kelli Williams has the tickets for the Griffins hockey game on Friday, December 4 which is a popular $2 beer & hotdogs night.  If the club can sell 425 tickets (232 sold to date), we’ll also reap the proceeds from a “Throw for Dough” between periods.  Individual tickets (up to 10) are $14 each, 11-25 tickets are $12 each and, if you buy 26 or more, the price is reduced to $11.  Please contact Kelli ( to buy your tickets for your family, friends, co-workers, clients, etc.  Your support for this club fundraiser is most appreciated.

Rivertown Honda Event:  Rivertown Honda’s 2-month sponsorship of the club resulted in over $2,000 in donations.  Thanks to Scott Pastoor and Beth VanWieren for hosting the “remote” radio event at the dealership.

FHF Fundraiser:  We heard about this event from a recent speaker.  The travel and art-themed event will be held on November 12 at The Cheney Place, 1600 Monroe N.W.  Kenowa Ambucs has been a supporter of the Family Hope Foundation for a few years now.  For more info go to or call 648-0490.

2016 Oscars Event:  The committee is meeting, a prime sponsor (Rivertown Honda) has been secured and additional sponsors and donations are being sought for this annual fundraiser in conjunction with the Grandville Rotary and Special Olympics on March 5.  Juliet Dragos of TV-13 will emcee the event that will include improv comedy, silent auction, dinner and wine/beer.  Save the date on your calendar and please contact Beth VanWieren to help or for more information.
