Today’s Meeting:

We had a small (but mighty) group of Ambucs today.  President Mavis Byers filled us in on Saturday’s Jenison Street Dance.  It was a hot time (90 degrees) so the attendance was down a bit but everyone had fun.  Thanks to all Kenowa Ambucs who helped out at the event – while not an official list, our volunteers included Mavis, MC Scott Pastoor and Beth plus Heather and our friends at the Grandville-Jenison Chamber of Commerce.

Our speakers today were our own Dan Carlton, who was on crutches after breaking a bone in his ankle, and Rod Weersing bringing us all up to date on the many projects they are working on in Georgetown Township.  These include the start of construction this week on a new 10,000 square foot senior center on 8th Avenue Lake more than double the size of the old facility; expansion of Rosewood Park (Rosewood @ 18th Avenue) already underway to include a restroom facility, expanded playground, additional parking and a small splash pad; plans for a Veteran’s Plaza on Chicago Drive @ Main Street with military service branch and U.S. flags to serve as a visible reminder of those who are serving or who have served in the military; and a Needs Analysis to be undertaken to determine space and use requirements at the Georgetown Library.  They were also asked about potential development in other parts of the township, liquor licenses, restaurants and more.  Thanks, Dan & Rod, for an informative presentation.

50/25/25 Winners:          Everyone was a winner, but no money changed hands.

Zoom Zoom Zoom

Wait, I think “zoom, zoom” was actually a Mazda catch phrase.  And it’s not a “rear end” sales event like in the current Volkswagen commercial, but Rivertown Honda in Grandville is partnering with the Ambucs in September.  There will be a test drive event and AmTrykes given away.  More details will follow but Mavis has provided some info that I will attach to this e-mail and everyone will have an opportunity to participate.

He Loves the Smell of [Money] in the Morning*

(*Paraphrased from what movie and spoken by which actor?  Answer below.)

David Hodge is sniffing out additional grant opportunities for the club.  Steve Davis (Walker Ambucs) has an OT student willing to write grants and Dave intends to re-apply to both the Wyoming and Hudsonville-Jenison Foundations.  A little help with the paperwork and administration would be appreciated, so please let Dave know if you can assist.

Chapter Miscellaneous

Photos Needed:  If you have any pictures of AmTryke recipients, please send them to Dave Hodge.  The Race Committee is using them in the thank yous to Memorial Day sponsors.

Special Family Fun Fest:  This annual event will be held on Saturday, October 17 at the Delta Plex from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.  The Kenowa and Walker Ambucs clubs will work together so please save some time on that date to help out kids eager to ride AmTrykes.

Thank You to Kenowa Ambucs:  Glenna Donovan, the PT student from East Grand Rapids attending UM-Flint who the club sponsored to receive a national scholarship, sent the club a thank you card that was passed around today.

Do You Have a Speaker Idea?  Do you know a potential lunch speaker or have an idea for a topic that might be of interest to our club members?  If so, please share that idea or contact information with Vice-President Dawn Martinson.

2015 Ambucs National Convention:  This year’s convention will be held in Biloxi, MS September 30 through October 3.  Those who haven’t had the opportunity to attend an Ambucs convention will find that it is an uplifting and energizing experience.  See: http://www.ambucs.org/assets/Uploads/National-Conference/BiloxiFlyer.pdf
