Today’s Meeting:

16 Ambucs attended today along with a guest of Jeff Carter.  I didn’t catch her name but understand she is affiliated with Baker College and involved in Physical Therapy.  On a member note, Mavis Byers let us know she has started a new job with PCE Insurance.  Congrats to Mavis on starting this new chapter of her career.

Brummel1

Our speaker was Richard Brummel of Vredevoogd-Brummel Risk Management.  Richard is a fourth-generation member of this family-owned agency that dates to 1939.  Richard’s topic was regarding liability risks associated with service on non-profit boards.  A non-profit is “owned” by the community it serves and he equated serving on a non-profit board with renting a car – you don’t own it but you are expected to return it in the same shape you found it or be liable for any damage you have done.  He pointed out non-profits can be sued by donors, employees, third parties, governmental agencies and others.  He also informed us that board members have a duty of care, duty of loyalty and duty of obedience.  Care includes making informed decisions; loyalty requires us to act in the best interest of the non-profit and obedience requires us to follow the rules and by-laws.  Best practices include asking questions about issues prior to voting, having dissent noted in the minutes, disclosing any potential conflict of interest and making sure the board is following the by-laws.  There was a lot of good information shared that applies to a variety of organizations we might serve including the Ambucs, our churches and other non-profits.

Oscars Night – The Reviews

Some time was spent reviewing this year’s Oscar’s Night fundraiser to brainstorm ideas for next year.  Topics covered included attendance, silent auction options, future partner organizations, entertainment, ticket prices, bar options and the AmTryke presentation.  Many thanks to those who helped organize the event, attended, made donations and/or sponsored in some way.

Board of Directors Action

The Chapter Board met on February 24 and approved the purchase of 3 AmTrykes and also a donation to the Kent Special Riding Program (KSRP) in the amount of $1500 for supplies to reconstruct their ramp for the disabled to mount horses.  A further donation to KSRP was approved to be made after June 1, 2015 to sponsor 10 riders in their summer program in the total amount of $1,800.

Now That You Know The Risks . . .

The annual club election of officers is coming up very soon.  Please give consideration to whether you might be willing to serve as an officer or on the Chapter Board of Directors (Mr. Brummel is an advocate of regular board member turnover).  We will have open spots for both Vice-President (a 1-year term in preparation for the presidency) and Secretary (2-year term).  Please let our current President or Vice-President know of your interest in running for an Officer position or for appointment to the Board of Directors.

Chapter Miscellaneous

Ambuc Spring Regional Conference:   The Spring Conference replaces the Fall Regional Convention and the Spring Officer’s Training and will be held on April 10-11 in Frankenmuth.

Paper Gator:   Did you know the club has a perpetual fundraiser via a “Paper Gator” paper recycling station.  The Gator is located at the Grandville DPW building parking lot at 4095 White Street in Grandville, one block west of Wilson.  Drop off your home or business recyclable paper to this location and the club gets a portion of the proceeds.
