Kenowa Klassified – 4/1/14

The Official Newsletter of the Kenowa Chapter of AMBUCS – Chartered May 28, 1957. President: Jason Minier – Vice-President: Beth Van Wieren Treasurer: Doug Levering Secretary: Kelli Williams – Sergeants: Kay Janus and David Hodge

Today’s Meeting:

21 Kenowa Ambuc April Fools were present today plus 2 guests — Matt Drueke (guest of David Hodge) and Lenny ? (guest of Jeff Carter).  We also welcomed back an old member from the Jenison Ambucs days, Dr. Ed Schmitt of Jenison Psychological Services.  Ed has rejoined the club.

Jeff Carter of Apogee Therapy was sworn in as a new member and promptly filled the role of speaker, as well.

Apogee recently won the Chamber of Commerce honor of “Small Business of the Year”.  They do physical, nutritional and speech therapy plus fitness and yoga in their facility at 3010 Wilson Avenue in Grandville.  Jeff has been a Physical Therapist for 29 years and recalls how helpful it was for him to receive an Ambucs Therapy scholarship as a student 31 years ago.  “Apogee” means “peak or pinnacle” and Jeff and his crew strive to provide the pinnacle of therapy services to their clients.  He focused on headaches today as his background included many years at Mary Free Bed as a headache specialist.  He provided much helpful information as to the source and treatment of many headaches.  Among the biomechanical issues that can lead to headaches are poor posture, poor flexibility and poor body mechanics.  These place abnormal strain on the head and spine leading to headaches that can affect “activities of daily living”.  There was a good dose of anatomy shared as well as clear explanations in layman’s terms and even some advice for self-treating via home exercise, relaxation

and sleep positioning.  I think everyone learned something from the presentation – thanks, Jeff.

We also elected new club officers today for the 2014-15 year.  President is Beth Van Wieren, Vice-President is Mavis Byers, Treasurer is Doug Levering, Secretary is Kelli Williams and Sgt’s are Kay Janus and David Hodge.  Their terms will begin on June 1.  Training for all club officers in the district will be held on Saturday, April 19 @ Bud & Stanley’s.

Seinfeld Challenge:  I couldn’t come up with a question on the “headache” theme.  Drop me a note if you can think of a bit of Seinfeld trivia on this topic or stay tuned for future challenges.

50/50 Winners:  Cheri Johns and Ken Krombeen

Spring Roundup

March and April are the months of the annual Ambuc “Spring Roundup” of new members.  See the attachment to this e-mail for details of how you could win $100 for signing up new members to the Kenowa Ambucs.

Beth is working on a July 3 beer tent fundraiser in Grandville in conjunction with the 4th of July festivities.  Further details will be coming in the future but save that evening to help out either with the tent or the drinking.
