of Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services (DHHS).  DHHS serves the hearing-challenged community in a very large 22 county area which is roughly the west half of the Lower Peninsula.  In Kent County alone there are over 50,000 persons with hearing loss and over 5,000 deaf persons.  DHHS is the only agency providing these services as 3 other agencies that were reliant on government funding have closed recently.  DHHS tries to stay independent with most of their $750,000 in revenues derived from fundraising and fees for service such as providing American Sign Language (ASL) interpreters.  They provided us with handouts on communicating with a person with hearing loss, the ASL Manual Alphabet and working with sign language interpreters.  Hearing loss is measured on a scale from mild to moderate to severe to profound and we should be aware that those affected consider it a “condition” not an “illness”.  DHHS helps folks with this condition to adapt and even runs summer camps for kids affected by hearing loss.  They brought many examples of technology aids they employ including monitors with visual cues that tell users when someone is at their door, when their phone rings and when their alarm clock goes off.  The last one even has a “bed shaker” feature.

50/50 Winners:  Bill Schrader and Dave Overeen of DHHS.

I Got Mine – Did You Get Yours?

Everyone should have received your invitation to the Oscar Night fundraiser on February 28 at Sunnybrook with red carpet, silent and live auctions, dancing and cash bar.  Please respond to the RSVP promptly and/or contact V.P. Beth VanWieren for details about sponsorships, auction items still needed, etc.  Proceeds will benefit our club, our partner Grandville Rotary club and the Family Hope Foundation.

The following members correctly answered last week’s challenge that asked you to name the Seinfeld character that purchased cheap invitations with toxic glue and what happened as a result.  Scott Pastoor (1st correct response received), Rod Weersing, Marty Rogalski, Keith Harris, Beth Van Wieren and David Hodge.  The correct answer:  George Costanza was the invitation purchaser and the result was that his fiancée, Susan, died.

New Seinfeld Challenge:  Deaf actress Marlee Matlin appeared as a character capable of eavesdropping on conversations by lip reading and is employed by George at a party to see what an ex-girlfriend is saying about him.  She lip reads and signs to Kramer who voices the conversation to George.  What 2 words does Kramer mistakenly interchange and voice to George?
