Today’s Meeting:

The temperature was low but the sun was shining and the roads were much better today than two weeks ago resulting in a group of 18 for today’s Ambuc lunch.  That number included both new member Alex Rusticus of Wilbur & Townsend (someone send me his e-mail address, please) and guest Dr. Jason Manning who is now working with Eric Hartman.

Our speaker today was Dr. Mary Rozendal, Ph. D, of the EnCourage Institute for Teaching & Learning.  Dr. Mary was a professor at the University of Missouri and SUNY-Buffalo for 11 years but returned to Michigan where her Institute specializes in helping children struggling to learn due to disabilities.  The Institute uses the latest brain research and an individual approach to facilitate learning in their clients.  There are two strands of programming involved, (1) Developmental Therapy for developmental delays or autism and (2) Educational Therapy.  The developmental therapy utilizes “P.L.A.Y. Project” to train parents to provide intensive therapy and intervention themselves since many of the autism sufferers require lengthy and expensive training of up to 20 hours per week.  Dr. Rozendal told us that brain scan research is exploding the knowledge we have of this area with the stronger research instructing special education efforts in the U.S.  The EnCourage institute has locations in Grandville and NE Grand Rapids and currently serves about 50 clients.  It was clear Dr. Rozendal knows her subject matter.

In other news, we are taking suggestions for a nickname for Dave Hodge.  Very shortly after his radio appearance for the Ambucs on WFGR FM 98.7 two weeks ago, the on-air morning host duo Dave interviewed with was sacked.  Very sad news, especially given the help and exposure they were giving to our cause, but the coincidental timing couldn’t be overlooked.   Initial suggestions include “Kiss of Death Dave” and “The Axe Man”.

50/50 Winners:  Dr. Mary and Kay Janus

Invitations (without toxic glue*)

Invitations will be going out soon for the Oscar Night fundraiser on February 28 at Sunnybrook. Proceeds will benefit our club, our partner Grandville Rotary club and the Family Hope Foundation.  Tickets will be $50 each for this sit-down dinner with silent and live auctions, dancing, cash bar.  Black tie optional but encouraged.  Contact V.P. Beth VanWieren for details about sponsorships, auction items needed, etc. if we are to reach our goal of raising $60,000 for the three organizations.

*Seinfeld reference.  Challenge:  Name the character who purchased cheap invitations with toxic glue and what happened as a result.

Chapter Miscellaneous

Griffins Game:  At least another dozen or so tickets for our Griffins game on Friday, March 7, 2014 were sold to our members today.  If you haven’t yet purchased tickets for your family, friends, clients, co-workers, team, school or church group, please do so at the next meeting.  We need to sell 425 total to get the opportunity for a “Throw for Dough” that night to raise more money for the club and we are starting to close in on that number.  With your help, we will make it.  Individual tickets are available at $14 (face value is $16) or buy for a group and save big bucks on each ticket.  Don’t miss this fun night of hockey with the AHL Champion Griffins.  Oh, and there will be $2 hotdogs and beer, too, for those who enjoy their hockey with a cold one (yes, I’m talking about the hot dogs).

Big Hat Day:   The first meeting of each Ambuc quarter – June, September, December and March.  Big Hats are also traditionally worn at any meeting during Branding Time and Spring Round-up.
